Develop your listening skills!

Here is a simple guide to developing your or your child's listening skills. This will prepare you for performance classes and develop musicality! I Have detailed below some links to youtube videos and some listening questions to think about as you hear the music:

As you listen, think:

- What does the music make you think of?

- Do you like the style of the piece?

- Is the music loud or quiet?

- Do you hear any musical elements, e.g scales, chords, staccato, pedalling?

As you listen, think:

- Is this music fast or slow?

- What hand has lots of notes?

- Is the music exciting? How does it change as you listen?

- Do you like the sound that Daniel Baremboim is making on the piano, is it soft, hard, forceful, calm, what do you think?

As you listen, think:

- At the beginning, is there a tune? When does it pick up?

- As the tune begins, what instrument plays it?

- What does the music make you think of?

- Is it fun to listen to?

As you listen, think:

- At the beginning, is the piano playing chords or melody? What happens after the orchestra plays?

- Can you hear any other musical elements, e.g scales, arpeggios, melody notes, bass notes, pedalling?

- Is the music happy or sad, or both?

- What does the music make you think of?

- Do you like how Martha plays the piano? Why?

As you listen, think:

- Does Yuja use pedal or not?

- Are the notes smooth or staccato?

- What are the dynamics like, loud or quiet? Where?

- How would you descibe the character of the music?

You don't need to listen to the whole of every song, just long enough to think about these elements.

Happy Listening!
